An International Center for Complex System studies is going to be formed within the ambit of the West Bengal University of Technology to foster the growth of inter-disciplinary research on non-linearity, chaos and complexity. Ontological reductionism, dominated the scientific thinking of the last century. In the present century the aspects of emergent behavior and self organization has been steadily gaining greater emphasis and importance. This is particularly relevant in the context of our University, even at an organizational level, where the major activities in teaching involve technology and management courses through its widespread network of constituent colleges with an envisaged coherence. Furthermore, the University has identified Life Science as one of its thrust area. Biological systems are perfect examples of adaptive complex systems. All of these activity areas provide natural milieu for the study of complex systems. Most of the recent technological developments exhibit emergent behaviors. Management is concerned with society and its aspects of complex system with its full ramifications. It is, therefore, no wonder that the University has placed so much of emphasis in setting up this multidisciplinary research center.
